Enrollment guide

What happens after you submit an enrollment request

Published April 2026 · 4 min read

After you choose a plan and submit your contact details, a real person takes over. Here's what that process looks like from request to live account, and what you need to have ready at each step.

Step 1: The follow-up call (within 1 business day)

After you submit an enrollment request, a licensed energy specialist will contact you using the phone number or email you provided. This isn't a sales call - the plan is already selected. The purpose of this contact is to verify your account details, confirm the plan terms you saw during comparison, and walk through any questions before submitting to the supplier.

If you're not available when the specialist first reaches out, they will attempt contact again. You can usually reach them by responding to the initial message or calling the support number listed on our contact page.

Have ready: Your current utility account number and the name on the account. The specialist will need this to confirm the correct service address for the enrollment.

Step 2: Supplier enrollment submission

Once your details are confirmed, the specialist submits your enrollment to the supplier on your behalf. This typically happens the same day as the verification call, during business hours.

The supplier receives your account information, verifies your utility eligibility, and initiates the switch. You don't need to contact the utility separately - the supplier handles the coordination with your distribution utility.

Step 3: Utility switch processing (3–21 days depending on state)

After the supplier submits the enrollment, your utility processes the supplier switch on their own timeline. This varies by state and utility:

  • Texas (ERCOT markets): Switches typically process within 3–5 business days and take effect on the next meter read date.
  • Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois: Utility switches generally take 7–14 business days depending on the utility and enrollment queue.
  • Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland:Allow 14–21 days for full confirmation, especially if you're switching away from an existing supplier.

You'll continue receiving electricity normally throughout the switch process. There is no service interruption when a supplier changes.

Step 4: Your first bill on the new plan

The first bill after a supplier switch can look different from what you're used to. The supply charge - the portion your new supplier controls - will appear as a separate line item or an updated rate on your utility bill. Your delivery charges, base fees, and taxes remain with your utility and are unchanged.

If the bill looks unexpected, check whether the switch completed mid-billing cycle. Some utilities prorate the first month, which can make the numbers look different until the second full cycle.

What to do if something doesn't look right

If your first bill is significantly higher than the estimate you saw during comparison, contact our support team first. We can check whether the plan was enrolled correctly, confirm what rate is effective, and help you understand whether the difference is a billing cycle issue or something that needs a correction.

For utility delivery issues, outages, or emergencies, always contact your utility directly - suppliers do not manage the physical grid.
